Introduction to the Naval Architecture And Shipping College
Founded in August 2001, the Naval Architecture and Shipping College (formerly known as the Navigation College) is located in the Haibin campus of Guangdong Ocean University. The existing backbone majors are derived from the fishing and Marine engineering departments of Guangdong Advanced Aquatic Vocational School, which was founded in 1935. It is an influential training base for shipping talents in the South of China. Mr. Chen Hongze, captain of the first oceangoing ship (Guanghua) after the founding of New China, is an early graduate of the college's navigation major.
The Naval Architecture and Shipping College has five undergraduate programs with distinctive sea-related characteristics, including Navigation Technology, Marine Engineering, Marine Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Communications and Transportation, and Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. Marine Engineering is divided into two training directions: sea-related and land-related. The Navigation Technology major was authorized as the Characteristic Major of Colleges and Universities in Guangdong Province in 2010, the Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering major was approved as the National First-class Undergraduate Major in 2020, and the Marine Engineering major was approved as the First-class Undergraduate Major in Guangdong Province in 2021. The College has 2476 full-time undergraduates and postgraduates currently. It has four teaching departments, namely Navigation Department, Marine Engineering Department, Shipping Management Department and Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering Department, and two auxiliary teaching units, namely Experimental Training Center and Crew Training Center. There are 113 staff members, among whom 81 are full-time teachers, including 7 professors and 26 associate professors. 48.1% of the full-time teachers have a doctor's degree. In addition, 36 teachers hold Certificates of Competence.
Relying on the disciplines of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and transportation Engineering, the College continuously optimizes the structure of its teaching staff and strengthens the quality of high-level talents training, including undergraduate and graduate students, to provide talent security and intellectual support for local economic development and the strategy of becoming a maritime power. In 2021, the master's degree authorization program of first-level discipline of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering and the Master's degree Authorization Program of Transportation major were approved by The State Council, and the discipline of Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering, with the Naval Architecture and Shipping College as the main co-construction unit, was selected as the key construction discipline of Guangdong high-level universities. At the same time, the school undertakes the training of doctoral students in the field of Marine Engineering and technology. The discipline now has 12 doctoral supervisors and 15 master supervisors, and has formed a team of professional supervisors with Pearl River leading talents as discipline leaders.
Guangdong Ship Intelligence and Safety Engineering Technology Center was approved by Guangdong Science and Technology Department in 2021. The total value of experimental (training) equipment owned by the college is more than 80 million yuan. The college has established the navigation virtual simulation training center, navigation technology comprehensive laboratory, marine engineering comprehensive laboratory, transportation comprehensive laboratory, water training center and other training places. The Navigation Skills Training Center is the Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center of Guangdong Province. And it has signed industry-university-research base co-construction agreements with more than 10 enterprises such as Zhanjiang Port Group, Guangdong Zhanjiang Shipping Group, Hainan Strait Shipping, and also signed bi-directional talent training base agreements with Zhanjiang military-civilian Integration Office and Zhanjiang Maritime Safety Administration.
Apart from the normal teaching and subject construction tasks, the College actively undertakes social training. At present, it has the qualification of crew training in ocean-going and coastal areas except for the captain and chief engineer. It meets the relevant requirements of the Regulations of the People's Republic of China on Crew Training Management in terms of equipment, venues and teachers, and has passed the certification of Crew Training Quality System by the Maritime Administration of the Ministry of Transport. In addition, it jointly carried out the "Spray Program" training for veterans and sailors with Zhanjiang Bureau of Veterans Affairs and Zhanjiang Maritime Safety Bureau, and achieved good social benefits.
The development of the College has been supported by the authorities at all levels and from all walks of life. It will always adhere to the development concept of attaching equal importance to talent training and scientific research in the field of waterway transportation, constantly optimize the structure of majors and disciplines, strengthen the teaching staff by training and introducing high-level talents, and constantly improve the quality of graduates. Under the background of in-depth implementation of major national initiatives such as "Maritime Power", "Transportation Power" and "The Belt and Road", the College will comprehensively promote the strategy of "connotation development, characteristic development and innovative development", and strive to build a high-level talent training and scientific research base with distinctive marine characteristics.
